The Basel Statements, developed by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), provide one of the most influential global frameworks for advancing hospital pharmacy practice. Since their introduction in 2008 and subsequent revisions in 2016 and 2024, the Basel Statements have helped guide hospital pharmacy development, assessment, benchmarking, and improvement across diverse healthcare systems worldwide.

However, understanding professional standards is only the beginning. The greatest value of standards emerges when they are interpreted, assessed, implemented, adapted to local healthcare environments, and translated into meaningful improvements in practice.

Basel Statements Academy for Hospital Pharmacy (BSAHP) is an independent educational initiative developed by Maram Shtaya to support the understanding, interpretation, assessment, implementation, and continuous improvement of hospital pharmacy practice through the application of the Basel Statements.

The Academy was established to bridge the gap between international professional standards and real-world implementation. Its vision is to support pharmacists, educators, researchers, students, and healthcare professionals in transforming global standards into practical improvements that enhance medication-use systems, patient safety, workforce development, leadership, stewardship, and quality of care.

The BSAHP Academy promotes structured learning focused on:

• Understanding and interpreting the Basel Statements

• Assessing hospital pharmacy practice using Basel-aligned approaches

• Identifying implementation gaps and improvement opportunities

• Supporting medication safety leadership

• Strengthening workforce development and workforce protection

• Advancing pharmacy informatics and technology integration

• Promoting stewardship and responsible medicine use

• Encouraging self-assessment and quality improvement initiatives

• Supporting continuous professional and organizational development

By combining education, implementation thinking, and practical improvement strategies, the Academy aims to help healthcare professionals move beyond awareness of standards toward meaningful and sustainable practice transformation.
